The resulting new body of water was called the Newfoundland Evaporation Basin. Salt Lake City, which is the capital of the state of Utah, has been named after this water body. In fact, it was originally called the Great Salt Lake City. So much salt is dissolved in the northern part of Utah's Great Salt Lake that its edges can become encrusted with crystals that sparkle against a treeless landscape and vast sky.
